Are you abandoning NextDocs? A straight answer.

Since we introduced Shyne in August, one question has arrived more than any other. By email, in app reviews, and in a long thread on AppSumo: is NextDocs being abandoned?

I wrote the launch post, so this one is on me too. The answer is no. Here is what "no" means in practice, because a one-word answer is not worth much.

What keeps working

Your NextDocs account, your documents, your exports, your plan and your credits all continue exactly as they are. If you bought a lifetime deal, it is a lifetime deal. Nothing about Shyne changes what you paid for.

We also keep the service healthy: models get upgraded, exports get fixed, bugs get closed, and the support desk reaches a person. That is not a wind-down; that is maintenance, and it is ongoing.

What has shipped in NextDocs since the Shyne announcement

Focus does not mean silence. Since July, NextDocs has shipped:

  • Export to Word. Documents export to DOCX with headings, tables and fonts intact. Details here.
  • Bring your own fonts. Upload WOFF2, WOFF, TTF or OTF files, or import any Google Font, assign them as theme fonts, and have them embedded in PDF, PNG and HTML exports.
  • Long documents that finish. Very long decks and reports complete reliably, and an interrupted run keeps the pages it finished instead of throwing them away.
  • Richer text on the canvas. Lists, quotes, code, links and underline, with pixel-accurate text editing.
  • New models underneath. GPT-5.6 runs the fast lane, Gemini 3.8 Flash was promoted to the quality lane on 3 September after it passed our long-document tests, and the model picker gained Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.8, Kimi K2.6, GLM 5.3 and Qwen 3.7 Max.
  • AI Memory. NextDocs remembers your role, audience, tone and standing preferences across chats. Read the announcement.
  • Sharper Google Docs export, PPTX fixes for colours and text sizing, a trash for documents, and a Help button that reaches our team within minutes.

The full list is in what's new in NextDocs, summer 2026.

What "focus" actually means

We were honest in August and we will stay honest: the new capabilities we build, such as several people and an AI working in one live file, video on the same canvas, and an agent that edits where you can see it, are built in Shyne. Those needed a different foundation, and we explained why in why we built Shyne.

NextDocs keeps doing the thing it is good at: turning a prompt into a finished document or deck, on your own, fast, with real exports at the end. It will keep getting model upgrades, export improvements and fixes, because those make it better at that job.

If you only ever use NextDocs, you lose nothing. If you want the collaborative, video-capable version of the idea, Shyne exists and is free to start.

If you hold a NextDocs lifetime deal

Some of you asked whether a lifetime deal bought on AppSumo still has value. It does: it is lifetime access to NextDocs, and NextDocs continues to run and improve.

We also said on AppSumo that we would match that access on Shyne for people who want it, and we meant it. The process is manual for now, which is why it can take a day or two: write to support@nextdocs.io from the email address on your NextDocs account, tell us it is an AppSumo account, and we will set you up on Shyne ourselves. You do not have to move. You can use both.

A few people asked for refunds inside the AppSumo window because of the uncertainty. That is your call and AppSumo handles it. We would rather have kept you, and we understand.

If you pay for NextDocs monthly or yearly

Nothing changes unless you want it to. If you would like to make Shyne home, reply to the launch email or write to support@nextdocs.io and we will activate your Shyne account by hand.

The short version

  • NextDocs stays up, supported and improving at what it does.
  • Lifetime deals are lifetime deals.
  • New kinds of capability land in Shyne, and existing customers get set up there by hand if they ask.
  • If you are not sure which product fits a given job, this guide is the honest split.

Thank you for the direct questions. They were fair, and they deserved a direct answer.
