Export to Word: DOCX is here

For a long time the most common complaint about NextDocs documents was the last step. You could generate a proposal or a report in minutes, but if the person on the other end wanted a Word file they could mark up, you were rebuilding it by hand. Since 25 July, you are not: NextDocs exports documents to DOCX.

We shipped it quietly, which was a mistake, because it answers the single most repeated request in our support inbox and in our reviews. So here is the proper announcement.

How to export

Open the document, choose Export, and pick Word (DOCX). The file downloads with the document's title as the filename. That is the whole procedure.

Every document type that NextDocs generates can be exported this way: proposals, reports, contracts, policies, resumes, cover letters, one-pagers and long-form pageless documents.

What carries across

The export is built from the document's structure, not from a screenshot of it, so the result is a real Word document:

• Headings map to Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and a table of contents work.
• Lists, numbered and bulleted, stay lists.
• Tables stay tables, with their cells editable.
• Images are embedded at full resolution.
• Links stay clickable.
• Fonts and colours from your theme or brand kit are carried by name. If the reader's machine does not have the font installed, Word substitutes, which is how Word behaves with any document.

If the document was generated in one of the 18 languages NextDocs supports, the export is localised the same way; right-to-left languages export as right-to-left documents.

What to check after export

Word is a flowing-page format and the NextDocs canvas is not, so a few things deserve a glance before you send the file:

• Multi-column layouts become single-column sections in Word. The content is all there; the arrangement is simpler.
• Equations and code blocks export, but Word renders them with its own styling. Check that a long equation did not wrap somewhere awkward.
• Page breaks follow Word's pagination, not the canvas's, so the page count can differ.

For a document that must look exactly as designed, PDF is still the right export. For a document someone else needs to edit, DOCX now is.

Where DOCX fits

NextDocs now exports to PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Google Docs, PNG and HTML from one source file. The rule of thumb:

A deck someone will present from PowerPoint	PPTX
A deck or document that lives in Google Workspace	Google Slides or Google Docs
Images for a web page or social post	PNG

Google Docs export also got sharper in v1.11.0: colours and highlights now survive the trip, so the two editable-document exports are on equal footing.

A note for our sister product

Shyne exports to PDF, PowerPoint, Google Slides, PNG, MP4 and HTML, but not to Word. If a Word file at the end is a requirement, NextDocs is the tool for that job. This is one of the reasons we keep two products rather than one.
