The best AI presentation makers in September 2026: what changed since we tested 15 tools

In February we published a hands-on test of 15 AI presentation builders. Seven months is a long time in this category. One of the fifteen no longer exists, three shipped agents, the office suites learned to build whole decks on their own, and the model underneath almost every tool changed at least twice.

This is the update. It is not a new hands-on ranking; it is a record of what each tool announced and changed since February, with sources, and an honest read on who each is for now. Where we make a claim about our own products, we say so.

The headline changes

• Tome is gone. tome.app returns a 404, and the founders raised $47 million on 9 September for an AI CRM called Lightfield. What happened to Tome has the details.
• The office suites arrived. Since 30 June, Gemini generates native, editable, brand-matched decks inside Google Slides from your Drive content. Microsoft 365 Copilot's Agent Mode, generally available since 22 April, builds and restructures decks in PowerPoint and can translate a whole presentation. ChatGPT gained a PowerPoint add-in in May, available on every plan including free, with template and font handling still described as incomplete. Claude creates .pptx and .docx files natively on all plans.
• Agents everywhere. Pitch shipped Pitch Agent in May and an MCP server and API in August. Plus AI shipped its Presentation Agent in February. Prezi launched Swoop in March. Genspark released a dedicated slide model, Gen-1 Slides, on 10 September.
• Design tools moved in. Canva's own foundation model, the Canva Design Model, arrived in April with fully layered, editable output and a Brand Intelligence feature that applies your fonts and colours automatically. Adobe's Acrobat AI now generates summary slides from a PDF.

Pricing was checked in September 2026 against each vendor's published page; some vendors gate their price tables behind sign-in, and we have noted only figures we could see.

What changed at NextDocs since February

Since we are on the list, here is our own entry with the same honesty:

• Exports now include Word (DOCX) alongside PDF, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Google Docs, PNG and HTML.
• Bring your own fonts, embedded in exports.
• Long documents that finish, with a replayable gate that every model has to pass before it gets a lane. Here is what five models did on it.
• Models: GPT-5.6 Luna on the fast lane, Gemini 3.8 Flash on quality, Claude Sonnet 4.6 on premium, with GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Kimi K2.6, GLM 5.3 and Qwen 3.7 Max in the picker.
• AI Memory, motion animations with MP4 export, and an MCP server so Claude or ChatGPT can create decks in NextDocs.

The thing NextDocs still does that none of the tools above do: generate two to four complete versions of the same deck from one prompt, optionally with a different model each, so you choose rather than edit.

How we would choose in September 2026

• You need a finished deck and a file, on your own, today: NextDocs, or Beautiful.ai if design polish matters more than choice of versions.
• Your whole company lives in Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 and the deck stays there: Gemini in Slides or Copilot in PowerPoint. They are now good enough for internal decks.
• You want the narrative, scrolling format Tome made popular: Gamma.
• A team edits together, or the deck is really a video: Shyne, or Pitch if video is not part of it.
• The deck is downstream of research an agent did: Genspark or Manus, then export and finish elsewhere.
• Budget is the constraint: Slidesgo AI.
